Friday, February 4th James was not getting better and was moved to ICU. His oxygen levels were poor.
Saturday morning, February 5th his fever continued, his oxygen was increased to 100% and he began coughing up blood. Mom and I were there visiting when the doctor ordered him transferred to Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
At Riverside they have critical care pulmonary physicians, which we do not in our area. He was coughing vigorously, heart rate elevated and oxygen levels poor.
He was sedated (put on paralytic to paralyze his body) and placed on a ventilator at Marietta Memorial before transport to Riverside.
He arrived at Riverside that afternoon and remained in critical condition.
Riverside asked for authorization to put him on an ECMO machine which circulates and oxygenates his blood. Further, they wanted to transport to OSU Medical Center.
At Riverside things got very bad for him. His oxygen levels were down into the 20's and his heart began to not function correctly.
Eventually they were able to get him stabilized enough for transport to OSU.
At OSU they got his oxygen levels to improve and got him stabilized on about 12 different IV's, the vent and ECMO machine.
